Institutional Approaches to Supporting Faculty for Civic Engagement: South Africa and America

Robert Bringle (Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis), Gerda Bender (University of Pretoria)

Abstract

For new models of civic engagement, faculty need support to conduct work in accordance with good practice. This paper will describe centralized approaches to providing faculty development for civic engagement, including planning civic engagement activities (e.g., service learning, community-based research), developing institutional resources, conducting research on service learning and civic engagement, and preparing dossiers for professional advancement. Drawing on case studies from a South African research university and America, both episodic programs (e.g., faculty workshops) and longer-term interventions (e.g., working with faculty during an academic year; multi-year curriculum development programs) will be presented as examples of a broad strategy for developing good civic engagement practice.
