Civic Engagement: What, How, and Why?

Abstract
Contemporary models of civic engagement present opportunities for higher education to explore the nature of its work in and with communities. If taken seriously, what are the implications of these models for mission, pedagogy, partnerships, scholarship, infrastructure, assessment? And what is the value added? Answering these questions will require innovation, persistence, and patience, but will lead to distinctive approaches to reshaping the public and civic purposes of higher education.
